  WHAT POULTRY?

Black Orpingtons - real favourites.    I was given a beautiful Black Orpington hen by a friend because his roosters were giving her a hard time. She has developed into a gorgeous bird and....

Duckwing Leghorns - Very striking and unusual, and you don't see them every day.    I was told to keep them locked up for awhile, and when I did finally let them out, they promptly roosted in a Norfolk Island Pine.     Getting them back under control wasn't easy so now they're cooling their heels in a bigger pen while I think about what to do next.....

Ameraucanas - I should perhaps say I'm not 100% sure if these really ARE true Ameraucanas or if they are Easter Egg Chickens.... Never mind, I like them and they lay blue-green eggs. I have a Lavender Rooster and 2 Lavender hens, and 2 pullets - one white and one black.

  CHOOKS AT POULTRY HEAVEN

A Note about the word "Chooks" For visitors from outside Australasia - the word "chook" is a very common and handy term used here to refer to male and female chickens collectively.

  A New Venture for Greystone

  Chickens come to Orotere

Between 1987 and 1996 we bred Pedigree Nubian and Nubian Cross Dairy Goats. But all our plans came to an abrupt end because we had unwittingly bought in animals infected with a serious disease.

For 10 years our sheds and fields were all but deserted ....

  The arrival of Lego

In early 2007 I volunteered a home for a good-looking young Buff Leghorn rooster who was lined up to meet his maker.

The good people I took him from kindly provided me with some companions for him - a Golden Laced Wyandotte hen of uncertain age and two middleaged Shavers.

It wasn't long before I discovered I really enjoyed their company and having them around the place. Unexpectedly, I was given a Black Orpington pullet, then a breeding group of purebred Australorps - a rooster and three hens. These are very nice chickens - the rooster in particular is show quality.

I had just recovered from building them a special coop and getting them settled in when my friend offered me 3 point-of-lay pullets. By this time I had folks asking me for free range eggs so I said "Yes, yes!"

What I didn't realise was that these pullets were a Campine, a Black Minorca and a Splash Black Pekin Bantam - all with their respective roosters !!!

Yikes! Things were starting to hot up.    I was building and altering sheds all around the place....

Altogether Greystone now has breeding groups of 10 different breeds, plus a small laying flock of Shavers. We are learning fast.
